Abstract Introduction:The purpose of this study is to evaluate the intervention effectiveness of 3A3R quit betel nut outpatient health education model by the indicators , including quitting intention, knowledge toward potential risks, awareness of related diseases, perception of oral cancer severity, stages of behavior change of betel nut users and number of chewing betel nut.
Purpose / Methods:246 Patients from 23 dental clinics were recruited into our study (a response rate of 85.4). 3A(Ask, Advise, Assess) 3R(Relevance, Risk, Rewards) outpatient health education of betel nut was performed to betel nut users by the dentists during the visit. Patients were asked to fill the questionnaire with a pre-test and post-test. Paired t- test were carried out for the statistical analysis.
Results:Knowledge toward potential risks, self awareness of related diseases and oral cancer severity, and quitting intention of betel nut users were all significantly improved. According to Transtheoretical Model, 71 patients in the study (32) moved to the next behavioral stage of quitting, along with 7.77 less use of betel nut per person in average
Conclusions:Our results revealed that 3A3R health education in the outpatient performed by dentists had significant influences on knowledge toward potential risks, awareness and intention of quitting to betel nut users, moving patients into positive behavioral stage and diminishing betel nut use.To fully evaluate its effectiveness, we suggest standardizing the operating procedure and extending the range of 3A3R 3A3R quit betel nut outpatient health education model.
